What is a Lip Lift?

Lip lift, or lip lifting, is a surgical procedure that shortens the space between the nose and the upper part of the lip, known as “philtrum”. The procedure increases the amount of pink tissue visible, making the lips look fuller and more prominent.

There are some proportions on our faces. According to this ratio, also known as the Da Vinci Ratios, we can divide our face into 3 equal and transverse parts. There is also a ratio for this lip area. This is as follows: in the region from the bottom of the nose to the chin area, the nose-upper lip should be 1/3, while the lower lip and chin should be 2/3. We try to achieve this rate with lip lifting operations.

This is of course not necessary, but it is something that is aesthetically preferred. If these proportions are longer on the upper lip, then the upper lip can appear lower and give the person a firmer air. Also, if there is a thin lip with it, it may be more troublesome for a woman.

Sometimes we do not want to perform a surgical intervention such as lip lift. Then we try to camouflage this by enlarging the upper lip and turning it a little more outward. But for some people, it is not enough to do just that. In this case, we are doing lip lifting, that is, the upper it. In fact, because we reduce the length of that area, not lift, the upper lip turns outward.

How is lip lift done?

As long as there is a proportionate length from the base of the nose, the skin and subcutaneous fat tissue are removed together and this area is repaired. A Lip lift procedure is a procedure that ends in half an hour under local anesthesia.

The stitches here are removed 1 week after the lip lift. After the stitches are removed, a pink streak appears on the nasal base. This line becomes white in a very short time in time, just like the lines we made in open rhinoplasty and columella. When it is whitened, it does not cause an uncomfortable problem since it is in the area of the normal natural nose. The process performed is also permanent.

What are the lip lift techniques?

Actually, it is a simple process. However, there are several other types of lip-lifting procedures. It is important to know the types and techniques, although it is mostly done as I explained above, you can talk to your surgeon about which one is right for you and make your decision accordingly.

Direct Lip Lift

Direct lip lift, sometimes called lip lift with the gull-wing technique, creates a more pronounced lip border. A thin strip of skin is removed just above the upper lip and the skin is pulled up, creating the illusion of a more pronounced vermilion (pink part of the lips).

The lip lift procedure usually leaves a small scar in the upper lip area.

Subnasal Megaphone

Subnasal megaphone is one of the most common lip lift procedures. The surgeon makes an incision hidden along the base of the nose, which is usually less visible. The incision is usually made in the shape of a megaphone and the middle, right, and left of the lip is pulled towards the nose.

Center Lip Lift

A central lip lifting process is similar to a subnasal megaphone lift. With the incision made under the nose, it shortens the space between the nose and the lip.

Corner Lip Lift

It is made by making two small incisions on both corners of the mouth and taking a small amount of skin. Some people decide to do this in conjunction with another type of lip lifting because they want to have fuller lips.

Italian Lip Lift

The Italian lip lift requires two incisions under each nostril, and except for this detail, it is very similar to a megaphone. Usually, it leaves no visible scar.

Who Are Good Candidates For Lip Lifting?

it is a good option for those who want to reduce the gap between lip and nose. This gap usually increases with age and can cause lips to appear thinner.

Young people who cannot achieve the desired appearance from the fillers or those who think that the fillers make their lips look unnaturally plump may also prefer the lip lift procedure.

it is a permanent solution, so it can also be beneficial for people who are tired of maintaining the filling.

If you don’t have too much space between the base of your nose and the top of your lip (about 1.5 centimeters) if you smoke and the recovery period after surgery is long for you (about 2 to 4 weeks), you have diabetes or another condition that affects the ability of your blood to clot, or mouth sores It is useful to talk to your surgeon before deciding on the lip lift operation.

How Is The Procedure?

There are several steps you can take before and after the surgery to prepare you for success.

Before surgery:

  • Your doctor may ask you to quit smoking in the weeks before and after surgery.
  • You may need to stop consuming alcohol 48 hours before, as it may have a bad effect on anesthesia.
  • Stay away from aspirin and blood thinners until 2 weeks before the lip lift procedure.

After the surgery:

  • Plan to rest for 24 hours after the procedure.
